In-House Professional Financial Guidance

International students in Australia who work part-time are required to follow Australian tax laws and meet their obligations with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). This includes understanding whether a tax return is required, what income must be declared, and how tax refunds are calculated.
At StudyHub Pro, we offer structured tax return support through our in-house Chartered Accountant and Registered Tax Agent. We help students understand the system, manage work-hour compliance, and lodge correctly during tax season—reducing errors and helping students stay compliant.

Understanding Tax Residency (6+ Months in Australia)

If you study in Australia for six months or more, you may be treated as a tax resident, depending on your circumstances. This is not the same as permanent residency, it only affects how the ATO calculates your tax.

As a tax resident, you may:

  • Pay tax at resident rates
  • Access the tax-free threshold (depending on your time in the financial year)
  • Be eligible for a tax refund based on your income and deductions

What Income Must Be Declared?

Most students must declare income earned in Australia (wages, salary, casual work). Some overseas income may also apply depending on your tax status.
If you’re considered a temporary resident for tax purposes, most foreign income is generally not taxed in Australia, but Australian income must still be reported.

How Tax Refunds Are Calculated

The ATO determines whether you receive a refund or owe extra tax based on:

  • Total income earned
  • Tax withheld by employers
  • Eligible deductions
  • Any applicable offsets

Your outcome can vary depending on your income, job type, and deductions claimed during the year.
